Our educational system has collapsed –Umahi

…says supervisors, inspectors demand for sex, money

Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, Monday lamented that the educational system in the state has totally collapsed and accused State Education Secretaries and Inspectors of demanding for sex and money from students.

Umahi made this known during a crucial meeting with education stakeholders at the International Conference Centre; ICC, inarrestAbakaliki.

He revealed that teachers in the state are now merchants while the school environments are unkempt.

“Education Inspectors and Secretaries ask for sex and money in exchange for favour. Teachers are no longer working. The education sector has collapsed. It is a failure”.

Umahi had during his inaugural speech on May 29th 2015, said he was prepared to improve the education sector, noting that his administration was prepared to step on toes to ensure total revamping of the sector.

“The educational system has fallen. The Education Secretaries are looking for money or sex and Supervisors as well. So much money is exchanging hands.

“Teachers are not coming to school. They are now traders in cloths and other items. Our educational system has collapsed and that is what is bringing cultism in the state.

‘’We want to declare today that our educational system is a failure.

“Having said this, it means we must do something. We can’t do something unless we step on toes. And we are going to be called wicked people.

The governor said his administration would not fold its arms and allow the future of Ebonyi children to be relegated to the background and called on the stakeholders in the sector to be disciplined and work assiduously towards the overall success of the education sector.

“The Universal Basic Education Board, UBEB, Secondary Education Board, SEB, Ministry of Education has all failed. The school environments are unkempt. We should be disciplined and hard working.

“We will call for an education summits soon. The Commissioner of Education, the Board will relocate to the zones and all those not expected in the office will also relocate to the zone.

“Any supervisor found collecting money or asking for sex will not only be sacked, but will be sent to jail,” he stated.
