Determined to sustain health for all, Delta State Government yesterday took proactive steps to tackle the rampant diarrhea disease across the state.
Sir Fidelis Okenmor Tilije, the State Commissioner for Water Resources who spoke to journalists on the measures taken by the state government, urged Deltans to form the habit of regular hand washing with soap, adding; “state government has found the need for regular hand washing with soap that will help to reduce the scourge of diarrhea and burden associated with unclean hands”
Listing Diarrhea, acute respiratory infections and hemorrhagic fever such as Lassa fever as diseases caused by unclean hands, Sir Tilije explained that unclean hands accounted for majority and mortality of people, particularly children under five years of age every year.
The Commissioner regretted that Nigerians spend millions of naira on treatment annually and not bothered on the need for healthy environment, adding that there has been pediatric death toll due to diarrhea and acute respiratory infections exceeded that of AIDS.
His words: “strict adherence to habit of hand washing with soap before eating or preparing food and after using the toilet, touching sick persons, handling animals or animal waste, coughing or sneezing could save more lives than any single vaccine or medical intervention” Sir Tilije said that apart from suffering and dying more from diseases caused by unclean hands, research had shown that they could also be powerful agents of changing behavior in various communities across the state, disclosing that his ministry through its parastatals:, Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) had concluded arrangement with Basic and Secondary Education to engage pupils and students in primary and secondary schools in the state to mark the demonstration of hand washing with soap in their various school premises.
Meanwhile, the State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Vincent Uduaghan yesterday reminded Deltans that DESTMA is an act of law and would outlive even the Okowa led administration, adding that government will not condone lawlessness on its roads.
