OBASEKI takes charge of Edo state

Godwin Obaseki, the newly sworn-in governor of Edo State on Saturday said he was now responsible for the leadership of the state and promised to begin work immediately.

The new governor stated this during his inaugural address as soon as he took his oath of office at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin as the state’s fifth elected governor.

“The responsibility of leading the match of Edo people is mine, that of my deputy governor and that of my government I would be announcing shortly. Many of the fundamental, major socio-economic development have been put in place by Adams Oshiomhole.

“I am looking forward to you to make our government accountable every step of the way.‎ As we have always said, our message is simple – let’s go further together. Our work starts immediately,” he said.
‎Obaseki and Philip Shuaibu, his deputy, were administered oath of office by the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Cromwell Idahosa.

‎Present at the event are former Head of State, Gen. Yakubu Gowon (retd.); the immediate past governor, Adams Oshiomhole, and his wife, Lara; the immediate past deputy governor, Dr. Pius Odubu; National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chief John Odigie-Oyegun; Deputy National Chairman (South) of the APC, Segun Oni,‎ and a former Governor of Ogun State, Chief Olusegun Osoba.

APC governors from different states including Akinwumi Ambode, Lagos; Rochas Okorocha, Imo, represented by his deputy, Prince Eze Madumere; Ibikunle Amosun, Ogun; Mohammed Abubakar Bauchi, and Abdul-Aziz Yari, Zamfara.
Also present were some captains of industry including Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote‎; Hakeem Bello-Osagie, Tony Elumelu and Capt. Hosa Okunbor (retd).

Meanwhile, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate who came second at the September 28 governorship election, has appealed to all his supporters to remain calm, non-violent, hopeful and prayerful.

He said he was hopeful he would reclaim his mandate as the duly elected governor of the state through the judiciary.

Ize-Iyamu stated this on Saturday in Benin at the unveiling of the office of the Edo Mandate Recovery Centre under the aegis of coalition of civil society groups, students, activists, voters, traders, market women, politicians and stakeholders.

“I will do everything to ensure the actualisation of the mandate they gave to me. I cannot be compromised, I cannot be bought and I have faith in the judiciary, I have faith in God”, he said.
Ize-Iyamu is challenging the outcome of the election at Edo State Election Petition Tribunal.
